    This snake gets its name from the fact that when viewed from certain angles in direct sunlight, it displays an Amethyst coloured shine over its body. The Amethystine Python is also known locally as a Scrub Python and is Australia’s biggest snake. They are often found in or near tropical rainforests and prefer to hunt during the night. Their keen sense of smell combined with heat-sensing organs below their jaws are used to detect warmth radiating from animals they prey upon. They are often seen sunning themselves during the day and have been known to grow up to 8 metres in length. Although sizes between 2 and 3 metres are  regularly seen a 5 metre amethyst is extremely rare.
