Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius)
The Cassowary is the largest native animal found in Australia’s tropical rainforests, Far North Queensland. They grow to two metres in height and over 60kg in weight. Their diet consists of fruit, fungi, snails, insects, frogs & other small animals. They play a vital role in dispersing native seeds in the rainforests through their scats which germinate & help rejuvinate the forests. These beautiful prehistoric looking birds are endangered due to human behaviour. An increased awareness within the community about their vulnerability and the dedicated work of some passionate people has helped. Please slow down in Cassowary country, keep dogs contained & do not feed these wild birds. This will suppport the survival of a true living dinosaur.
